Month 2 YAY!

Well it's been 2 whole months since my journey began. I am so excited! My locks are coming along slowly but surely. My slippage is calming down and I am very impressed with my progress. I had my hair re-tightened by my consultant , and here are my pictures.......

My hair is growing like crazy! Now I have the build up issue in the back row of my locks. I don't use products on my hair. I have been washing with starter shampoo and Neutragena T-Gel. I have tried a Listerine and ACV rinse. My consultant thinks its the T-Gel. I don't think I can go the Brunsli route with the marker just yet ;-)

Any help is appreciated.....

I read that vinegar is good with getting rid of the build up too

The Apple Cider Vinegar rinse is excellent for getting rid of flaking and build up issues. I have done it before, but I heard that it is not recommended for beginners since it tends to soften the hair, and may as a result cause slippage, so I haven't used it since. Your locks are growing like weed though! Happy 2 month :)

I got my sisterlocks installed on January 19, 2009 but before my installation, I had an awful itchy, flaky scalp condition (big flakes) which almost drove me crazy. My scalp was even discolored and I had scratched small bald spots in places. It was crusty like cradle cap. I was brushing flakes off my clothes all day long. I don't mean to gross out anyone; I'm just trying to explain how severe my condition was.

I had been meaning to go to the dermatologist, but never made it so I treated my scalp with Nizoral or T-Gel and ACV rinses every other week (before the install) and the condition seemed to lessen, but I wanted it gone.

After my SL installation, I finally made it to the dermatologist and he said I had dermatitis. I thought it was a worse condition because nothing helped and the flaking was horrible.

This is how my problem was resolved: the dermatologist wrote me a prescription for Clobetasol Propionate Topical Solution USP, 0.05% (50 ml). He said it's a steroid, so please make a note of that. Also, you don't have to go to the dermatologist for a prescription. If you are sure you have dermatitis, ask your regular doctor to write you a prescription. Anyway, I applied the medicine to my scalp to the affected areas as directed. At first, it didn't seem like this stuff was doing anything, but after a week I think that's when I noticed that my scalp had completely cleared up like I never had the condition to begin with...no more itching, flaking/crusting discolored scalp. And, my hair has mostly filled in.

Let me share with you what irritated my scalp to that severity. It was the hair oil I was using prior to my SL installation. I must be allergic to one or more of the ingredients. It had been irritating my scalp for more than a year because that's about how long I had been dealing with the dermatitis. I was able to determine that because after getting my SL's installed in January, my consultant instructed me not to use hair oil products, but to spritz with water. And, since I'm not putting oil on my hair or scalp, I've had no more scalp or flaking problems.

I read all the SL blogs and see that this problem is common. I think when this happens, if over-the-counter or natural remedies or dietary changes are not resolving the issue, we should seek medical attention. That's what helped me. Hope this information helps you and others. Please pass this on. Enjoy your Sisterlocks. I'll be checking back in on your progress.
